What training do you offer?
We offer two 3-week residential training courses.
One 3-week training course we offer is our Behaviour Modification programme (BMP). This course focuses on your dog’s behaviour, this may be the course for you if your dog shows aggression, is nervous/fearful or if your dog has OCD.
Our other 3-week training course is the Complete Training Package (CTP). This course focuses on obedience, but only certain skills. These are:
- Heel on lead
- Heel off lead if possible
This course is for the owners who want general obedience for their dog.
The other type of training that we offer is Boarding and Training (B&T) these come in different sessions, 1 training session a day, 2 training sessions a day or 3 training sessions a day. Each training session is a minimum of 20 minutes per session. This is more bespoke training that can be customised to focuses on a specific skill or behavioural problem. It is also beneficial to be used as follow up training after they have completed one of our courses.
Does my dog have to stay for 3 weeks?
For the BMP and CTP training courses your dog will have to stay with us for 3 weeks. This is because in the first week it is all about building up the relationship between your dog and the trainer, also in the first week the trainer will begin counter conditioning. Week 2 is where the counter conditioning continues and the trainer begins promoting positive behaviour. In the last week this is where the trainer will be securing the good behaviour in place and adding any advance training they feel necessary.
Will I get updates about my dog?
Yes, you will receive regular updates about your dog. The first update you will receive after 3 days of your dog’s arrival date, this is because the relationship between the trainer and your dog will have begun to form. You will be able to see pictures and videos on the Facebook group ‘My Royvon (Location) – dog forum’
Will my dog have the same trainer?
Yes, your dog will usually have the same trainer throughout their course. However, your dog may sometimes change trainer or work with the other trainers as well if we feel it will benefit your dog. When coming back for follow up lessons, you will be able to see the trainer’s schedules and pick who you would like.
Are all dogs trainable?
Yes, all dogs are trainable depending on the individual dog’s level of intelligence and drive. There are many facts that are at play with how far your dog can progress with the training. Some breeds are inherently easier to train than others.
What training methods are used?
Royvon promotes a positive reinforcement training environment for all guest dogs. Reinforcements will vary from dog to dog, and are based on the individual dog’s sensitivities and motivations. All desired behaviour is reinforced by a reward, whether it be voice, touch, a toy, play or food, et. al. All unwanted behaviour is either re-directed, or, as needed, corrected.
A correction may consist of a voice (i.e. “ah ah”, “eh” or “shhh”) or another non-harmful method to either mark the unwanted behaviour or break the focus to enable the handler to re-direct the behaviour to something that will earn a reward. Dogs are quick to learn what behaviour earns rewards and what behaviour is either ignored or marked, thus the experience becomes more and more enjoyable for them.
What if my dog is untrainable?
There are very few dogs out there that are deemed “too damaged” to train. While there are no guarantees in regards to any dog’s full potential, there are limitless ways to counter-condition, re-shape, control and/or manage a difficult dog and still be able to enjoy a mutually fulfilling life together. If in doubt, schedule a hands-on assessment to discuss the options and possibilities.
