By: Jayne Llewellyn – Manager at Royvon Merthyr
This is a question that I get asked by almost every parent who is thinking of booking their family member into Royvon for a holiday or training. I always advise all parents to come along and meet us, have a look around and see the different choices first hand , discuss their individual dogs needs and then make an informed decision with our assistance.
We have two main types of accommodation, our pet hotel and our standard accommodation. So what is the difference?
The pet hotel in Merthyr is designed along the lines of a room in a home environment. Each room is self contained with brightly coloured walls, children’s size single beds with duvets and pillows. Each room has a television set and is individually heated with electric heaters and air conditioned in the hot weather. Each room also has web camera coverage from during the day time up until about 9 pm each night when the lights are turned out and the guests retire for the night. These rooms are indoors and do not have access onto an outside area. Guests that are staying in these rooms do not have a choice whether they want to wander outside and watch the world go by, bhut are obviously taken out for regular toilet breaks and their play and activity sessions. The rooms are all large in size and are suitable for families of dogs or larger breeds. We regularly have a family of 2 great Danes as guests and they enjoy staying in the pet hotel and have done so for many years.
Our suite sizes are 10 Square meters.

The second accommodation option at Merthyr is our Standard Kennel Room. This accommodation has an inside room with a plastic dog bed and vet bedding supplied but guests are also welcome to bring along their own bedding if they wish to give these rooms a more homely feeling. Each room has a small door which leads out into an enclosed and covered run area where your pet can lay on their outside kuranda bed and watch the comings and goings of the staff and other guests or play with their toys. They can also choose to stay inside in their room area where they can relax in their baskets with their own personal belongings if they prefer. The choice is theirs. These rooms do not have televisions or web cameras but never the less are very comfortable and are the preferred option for the majority of our guests and their parents. The standard rooms come in a variety of sizes and are situated throughout the location. Some blocks are quieter than others. All standard rooms are heated or cooled depending on the weather.
Our standard accommodations come in 4 sizes, these are:
Small - 4'8 x 8'8
Medium - 5'2 x 11'
Large - 6'3 x 11'
Extra large - 8'9 x 9'7
(Standard Room - Medium)
(Standard Room - Extra Large)
So what should you choose? Well this depends on what you feel your dog will prefer? If your dog is sedate, elderly or just a couch potato then the hotel may be fine but if your dog is inquisitive,. nosey, gets bored easily or just likes being outdoors then maybe the standard rooms would be more suitable. We have had guests that have stayed in both types of accommodation and we have found that the room choice has not been suitable When this happens we will do what is best for the dog and move them to a place where they are happiest. We always do what we feel is best for our guests. Just one word of advice! Please choose why you genuinely feel is best for your dog and don’t choose the hotel just because you want to see your dog on the web cameras. This is a very bad decision and one that many owners mistakenly make. The comfort and wellbeing of your dog is much more important than being able to see your dog while you are on holidays.
If you are at all unsure we are happy to offer a complimentary stay to see which suites the best.
